The Trichocereus “Copper Barrel” is a visually appealing cactus cultivar, an Altman hybrid of Trichocereus grandiflorus, opens in a new tab noted for its compact, barrel-like shape and spectacular flowering display. It is a hybrid created by growers, so it is not found naturally in the wild.
It has been developed to have a more compact shape and to produce colorful flowers more often. It is popular among cactus lovers because it combines the look of a barrel cactus with the flowering style of the Trichocereus type. It can be grown in desert gardens, rock gardens, or as a decorative container plant.
The Trichocereus ‘Copper barrel’ cactus forms a rounded body with well-defined ribs lined with golden to copper-colored spines.
The body stays compact, usually reaching about 12 inches tall and 12 inches wide when grown in a pot, but it may get larger in the ground.
Its deep green skin and bright spines make it attractive even when not in bloom.
The Trichocereus ‘Copper Barrel’ blooms appear in spring or early summer and can be shades of pink, red, or copper-orange, depending on the plant.
Flowers are often several inches wide and last for a couple of days, with the plant producing several over the season.
When it comes to care, the Copper Barrel likes full sun but can also handle bright indirect light indoors. Use a well-draining cactus soil, opens in a new tab to keep roots healthy. Water deeply, but only when the soil is fully dry. In winter, water very lightly or not at all.
It prefers warm temperatures but can handle light frost if kept dry.
Outdoors, it is best grown in USDA zones 9–11. Indoors, keep it in a bright window away from cold drafts.
This cactus needs little pruning. If a stem or section becomes damaged, it can be removed with a clean cut, and the plant will slowly grow new sections. Removing old flowers after blooming helps keep them looking neat.
Overall, the Copper Barrel is special because it has the strong, rounded look of a barrel cactus with the bonus of frequent, colorful flowers. It is small enough for containers but striking enough to be a focal point in the garden. With its easy care and bright display, it is a perfect choice for beginners and collectors alike.
