Prunus schmittii , ook bekend als de Schmitt-kers, is een betoverende sierkers die behoort tot het geslacht Prunus en de familie Rosaceae. Deze prachtige boom is afkomstig uit Noord-Amerika en is geliefd om zijn opvallende bloemenpracht en sierlijke groeiwijze.

Het is een bladverliezende boom die een gemiddelde hoogte bereikt van 8-10 meter. De boom heeft een elegante en opgaande groeiwijze met takken die in het voorjaar bedekt worden met prachtige bloemen. De Schmitt-kers staat bekend om zijn rijke bloemenpracht in het voorjaar. De boom geeft talrijke enkele, witte bloemen met een subtiele roze tint, die samen een spectaculair uitzicht bieden. De bloemen trekken bestuivende insecten aan, zoals bijen en vlinders, wat de tuin tot leven brengt.

Prunus schmittii is over het algemeen winterhard en kan koude temperaturen verdragen tot ongeveer -20°C. De boom gedijt het beste in gematigde klimaten en heeft een voorkeur voor een zonnige tot halfschaduwrijke standplaats. De bodem moet goed doorlatend zijn en licht vochtig blijven.

Het snoeien van Prunus schmittii moet met zorg gebeuren om de bloei niet te belemmeren. Beperk het snoeien tot het verwijderen van dode, beschadigde of kruisende takken. Snoei bij voorkeur na de bloei in het late voorjaar om de bloei voor het volgende jaar niet te beïnvloeden.
