Wetenschappelijk gezien is rozenkwarts een siliciumdioxide met een hexagonaal kristalstelsel. Hoewel het vaak wordt gevonden in massieve vorm, kunnen in zeldzame gevallen transparante rozenkwarts kristallen worden aangetroffen. Deze kristallen zijn echter meestal troebel, wat een gevolg is van talrijke minuscule insluitsels van vezelachtige mineralen, vaak dumortieriet, die het licht verstrooien.

Een bijzondere eigenschap van sommige rozen kwartsen is asterisme. Wanneer deze stenen worden geslepen en gepolijst, kunnen ze een sterachtige schittering vertonen als gevolg van de reflectie van licht van de interne vezelachtige insluitsels. Dit wordt dan ook ‘’ starlight ‘’ genoemd

Geologisch gezien is rozenkwarts meestal gelinkt aan pegmatieten en metamorfe rotsen. Vanwege de brede beschikbaarheid en prachtige kleur wordt het vaak gebruikt in sieraden en als een decoratief materiaal in sculpturen en andere kunstvoorwerpen.
