In de winter bewijst de nestkast vaak een goede dienst voor de vogels om te schuilen tegen het slechte weer.

Plaats de nestkast aan een boom of muur, op een hoogte tot max. 2 meter, op een goed verborgen plek tussen dicht struikgewas of klimopplanten, op een rustige en enigszins beschutte plaats, dus niet pal in de zon of op de regenzijde, met een vrije aanvliegroute voor de vogel. Hang i.v.m. het territorium van de vogels de nestkast minimaal 10 meter weg van nestkasten die voor eenzelfde soort vogel bedoeld is en minimaal 3 meter weg van voederhuizen. Het najaar is de beste tijd om de nestkast schoon te maken.
