Symboliek en achtergrond

De vlag werd officieel aangenomen op 30 november 1955 voor Noord-Vietnam, en werd na de hereniging in 1976 de nationale vlag van het huidige Vietnam. Het ontwerp is sterk verbonden met de socialistische ideologie van het land. De opvallende rode kleur en de gele ster zijn niet alleen nationale symbolen, maar ook verbonden met het historische streven naar onafhankelijkheid en eenheid.
