This is the Independent City of Alexandria, Virginia entry in the series of 1815 Virginia Landowners Booklets. It's an alphabetical listing of all 1815 landowners found in this city, as well as the accompanying description of the location of said property. A helpful resource for Virginia genealogy!

About this series:

In 1782 the General Assembly of Virginia enacted new tax laws which created within each county an enumeration of land and certain personal property. These early land tax laws required a tax commissioner in each district of a county to record a list of the names of persons owning land or town lots, the quantity of land owned and its value, and the amount of tax owed. By 1813, a brief geographic description (usually citing an adjacent stream, road, or other landmark) was required; in 1814, the distance and direction from the courthouse for each parcel was also added to the tax rolls.

The present work is an alphabetical listing of all 1815 landowners found in each county, as well as the accompanying description of the location of the said property. We have not included the number of acres, taxes assessed, or any transactions between landowners which may have been noted on the tax rolls; also, in many cases the geographic location was provided as "adjacent to John Smith", etc. and, while useful many times to a genealogist, was considered to be beyond the objectives of this project. The reader is encouraged to consider the information here-in as an "outline" of early landowners in Virginia rather than a "text" due to the year-to-year variation in information provided to the clerk (or recorded by the clerk), omissions, lack of "identifiers" to determine if "same name" was also "same person" within a district or across districts, marginal quality/clarity (in a few cases) of the microfilm copy, and, not least, errors on the part of either the original clerks or the current author while transcribing.

Some of the approaches to utilizing the 1815 landowner information include:

  • observe distinct clusters of the same surname within a county in order to clarify the common surnames such as "Smith", "Anderson", etc;
  • identify non-resident landowners and their county (or state) of residence (these people often being former residents of the current county);
  • determine neighbors with different surnames (often being relatives);
  • use the 1815 information as a "bridge" from the 18th and 19th century deed/will books to the 17th and 18th century land grants/patents in the county;
  • evaluate the 1810 to 1840 census information which generally grouped neighbors;
  • substitute this information for missing deed/will books in the "burned" counties; and, clarify/enhance vague deed/will information in the counties with more complete records.

FORMAT OF PRESENTATION: Each entry is listed as: Surname, name, personal identifiers (if any); location/place-name of land; miles/direction from the 1815 courthouse. If multiple owners are listed for a property, the listing is duplicated under each of the owner's surnames (i.e "Smith and Brown" is also listed as "Brown, --see Smith"); when multiple owners share a common surname, the property is only listed once. When a landowner had land at more than one location/place-name, the miles/direction listing for each parcel is in the same sequence as the location listing (i.e. James RV, Slate CK; 12N, 5SW.). In the few cases where a landowner had "many" parcels, the miles/direction notation is attached to the location listing (i.e. Sandy RV- 5NE, Willow CK-7S, etc.)

beautiful draping and forgiving
Size: X-Large, Color: Navy Polka Dot
A beautiful dress. Well made. Fully lined. I don't know what they mean by front slit. There's no slit unless they meant there's a waist line. Fitted but true to size. There's a side zipper that helps get in and out of the dress. There's also a corset in the back that pulls any slack. I'm 5'5" and weigh 185 lbs. It's ankle length. The Drop makes good dresses. I bought the Crimson too and it's a beautiful red that makes everyone turn and gaze. There's another dress the Drop makes which is polka dot and same version in ivory. Beautiful draping and forgiving. I found these dresses when viewed at emanuela.moss@tiktok.

Cute dress, just not for me.
Size: Medium, Color: Iceberg Linear Floral, Size: Medium, Color: Iceberg Linear Floral
5’4”, size 6/8. I bought a medium. The Good — the color is accurate, and the pattern is pretty in person. It’s fully lined, and The material doesn’t feel cheap. The Bad — the fit was just odd. I’m a 6/8 and reliably a medium, but the fit was so weird on me, that I’m not even sure what the problem was. I don’t know how a bust can be both too big and too small, but that’s what I felt like here! The length was also not good for me, but is accurate to the picture. I’m 5’4” and it hit right above the ankle bone. TLDR; the dress is nice, but the fit is bad on me.

Lovely dress. Good quality but squashes my boobs
Size: Small, Color: Navy Polka Dot
Size chart is accurate but if you have a large bust consider sizing up, the bust area doesn’t have much room so expect lots of cleavage if you have a large chest. It kind of squashed my boobs and doesn’t provide the best support. This is best for smaller chests. The quality is nice and it washes well. This can be worn with flats on a casual day or dresses up with some heels. This dress is lined and not see through.

My favorite this summer
Size: 9, Color: Red Leather, Size: 9, Color: Red Leather
These are very nice. I like this type of sandal with the "thong" feature while also having my foot gently hugged. These did not require much breaking in, seemed pretty comfortable from the first wear. I wore them to a high-end rooftop restaurant with a chiffon and silk maxi dress, and it worked really well, got compliments and all, though I have no good shots from there with these sandals visible. The red color definitely makes them pop, especially with black elements of the outfit. I also got them in black here, and in white from another store. Their shape is delicate, yet sharp and stylish, and they seem to be well-made. When I got these shoes, I took them to my artistic shoe repair guy, to promptly put protective layer on the front bottom of the soles. That way, it always looks like new, no scratched sole. That costs a bit, but worth it for me. I might buy a pair or two in some other colors, later. I am 5'10" tall, clothes size M, shoes - 9, 150lb. These shoes feel true to size.
