You or Someone Like You: Niche Perfumery's Fresh Perspective

French niche house Etat Libre d'Orange built its reputation on provocative names and unconventional compositions. You or Someone Like You takes a different approach—the 2017 release opts for subtlety and wearability rather than shock value, creating a fresh floral that works across gender lines.

Hedione Takes Center Stage

Hedione dominates this composition, and that's intentional. This synthetic molecule, discovered by Firmenich, creates a fresh, airy quality that many describe as "transparent jasmine." It amplifies other florals without adding weight or sweetness, giving You or Someone Like You by Etat Libre d'Orange its distinctive lightness.

Cassis (blackcurrant) adds a tart, fruity element that brightens the opening. It's not the jammy, sweet cassis found in many fragrances—this leans greener and sharper, contributing to the overall fresh character rather than pushing it toward gourmand territory.

Rose Reimagined

Rose appears here in its cleaner, more modern form. Combined with hedione's jasmine-like transparency, the rose reads as fresh petals rather than rich, honeyed blooms. This keeps the floral elements from becoming heavy or traditionally feminine, making the scent equally wearable for men and women.

The composition stays relatively linear—what you smell in the opening remains consistent through the dry-down. That simplicity is part of the design. This Eau de Parfum doesn't aim for dramatic evolution or complex base notes. It maintains its fresh, floral-fruity character from first spray to final fade.

Performance and Wearability

Longevity sits at 4-6 hours, lighter than many EDPs but appropriate for the fresh profile. Projection stays close to skin—this is intimate rather than attention-seeking. The sillage whispers rather than announces, making it suitable for close-quarter environments like offices or small gatherings.

Ideal Wearing Scenarios

  • Spring and summer daytime wear when heavier scents feel oppressive
  • Professional environments requiring subtlety and freshness
  • Warm weather casual occasions from brunch to garden parties
  • Layering base for adding freshness to richer fragrances
  • Anyone seeking clean, modern florals without powder or vintage vibes

The Etat Libre d'Orange Ethos

This French house launched in 2006 with provocative names like "Secretions Magnifiques" and "Fat Electrician." They've built a following among fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate creativity and quality. Etat Libre d'Orange You or Someone Like You shows their range—they can do quiet sophistication as well as loud provocation.

Why This Fragrance Stands Apart

The niche market overflows with heavy ouds, challenging animalics, and experimental compositions. You or Someone Like You offers something increasingly rare: a genuinely fresh, wearable fragrance from a house known for pushing boundaries. It's proof that "niche" doesn't require difficulty or acquired taste—sometimes it just means doing something common uncommonly well.

Getting the Most from Your Bottle

The moderate longevity means you might want to refresh mid-day for all-day wear. Keep a travel atomizer for touch-ups, or layer over matching body lotion to extend performance. The 3.4 oz bottle provides good value, especially considering you'll likely use this frequently during warm months when its fresh character shines brightest.

A book reluctant readers will love
Format: Kindle
Kids who are Minecraft fans will love Scott Charles’ Trapped in Class, Book 1 of the Video Game Elementary series. Connor is a fourth grader at Video Game Elementary, an online elementary school built inside a fully immersive virtual reality video game. Connor’s watching the clock, waiting for school to end so he can go to his first practice with the Swords Team when suddenly there’s a strange hiss, bleep, crack, and the world fades into white. The next thing Connor knows, it’s morning again. Like some weird, middle school version of Groundhog’s Day, the day has restarted. Stuck in a time loop, Connor must fight Fanged Slime, Vampire Mold, and other monsters to keep the school’s power crystals from being destroyed. Luckily, he has a school custodian, a friend named Glitch, a girls who’s very good at hacking the system, and a cleaning ghost with an attitude to help him. This book is easy to read and action packed. It should be a great hit with kids who’d rather hold a game controller than a book. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
