By the New York Times bestselling author of The Bone Clocks and Cloud Atlas - Longlisted for the Man Booker PrizeIn 2007, Time magazine named him one of the most influential novelists in the world. He has twice been short-listed for the Man Booker Prize. The New York Times Book Review called him simply "a genius." Now David Mitchell lends fresh credence to The Guardian's claim that "each of his books seems entirely different from that which preceded it." The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet is a stunning departure for this brilliant, restless, and wildly ambitious author, a giant leap forward by even his own high standards. A bold and epic novel of a rarely visited point in history, it is a work as exquisitely rendered as it is irresistibly readable. The year is 1799, the place Dejima in Nagasaki Harbor, the "high-walled, fan-shaped artificial island" that is the Japanese Empire's single port and sole window onto the world, designed to keep the West at bay; the farthest outpost of the war-ravaged Dutch East Indies Company; and a de facto prison for the dozen foreigners permitted to live and work there. To this place of devious merchants, deceitful interpreters, costly courtesans, earthquakes, and typhoons comes Jacob de Zoet, a devout and resourceful young clerk who has five years in the East to earn a fortune of sufficient size to win the hand of his wealthy fianc e back in Holland. But Jacob's original intentions are eclipsed after a chance encounter with Orito Aibagawa, the disfigured daughter of a samurai doctor and midwife to the city's powerful magistrate. The borders between propriety, profit, and pleasure blur until Jacob finds his vision clouded, one rash promise made and then fatefully broken. The consequences will extend beyond Jacob's worst imaginings. As one cynical colleague asks, "Who ain't a gambler in the glorious Orient, with his very life?" A magnificent mix of luminous writing, prodigious research, and heedless imagination, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet is the most impressive achievement of its eminent author. Praise for The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet
"A page-turner . . . David] Mitchell's masterpiece; and also, I am convinced, a masterpiece of our time."--Richard Eder, The Boston Globe
"An achingly romantic story of forbidden love . . . Mitchell's incredible prose is on stunning display. . . . A novel of ideas, of longing, of good and evil and those who fall somewhere in between that] confirms Mitchell as one of the more fascinating and fearless writers alive."--Dave Eggers, The New York Times Book Review "The novelist who's been showing us the future of fiction has published a classic, old-fashioned tale . . . an epic of sacrificial love, clashing civilizations and enemies who won't rest until whole family lines have been snuffed out."--Ron Charles, The Washington Post "By any standards, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet is a formidable marvel."--James Wood, The New Yorker "A beautiful novel, full of life and authenticity, atmosphere and characters that breathe."--Maureen Corrigan, NPR

Good product.
Color: Gray, Size: 18"x24"
I live in Michigan so we have cool nights. We have hot days. Last night I went to pick up my new cooling mat to put it up for the evening and was totally blown away at how cool it was to the touch. For the price, the quality is outstanding. I will be purchasing more in the future once I know that my cats will use it. We haven't got that far yet, but once they do I will try to include pictures of them using it. I hope this helps someone as I am pretty picky about what product I buy. I was thoroughly impressed. The back side, or the warmer side is very soft and perfect for winter time use. It was an absolute genius idea to make one that is universal.

Max loves it!
Color: Gray, Size: 24"x36"
Phoenix got hotter sooner this year, and even with a short haircut, my baby kept trying to find a cooler spot. I had my doubts about whether this bed would actually keep him cooler, and Max was initially suspicious (especially after he saw the cat picture on the label). It only took one hot afternoon to sell him on this cool, comfortable lounge spot. It does feel cooler; it's a lot more comfortable than the hard tile floor and he is out of the way when on it. Good buy at a good price.

GREAT QUALITY CAT BED
Color: Gray, Size: 18"x24", Color: Gray, Size: 18"x24"
We love this self-warming and cooling cat bed because it's super soft, and the cooling side really works well! I can feel with my hand how cool it is by just touching it. I plan to put this outside in my cat's outdoor house; it will really help keep him warm in the winter and cooler in the summertime. It was super easy to throw in the wash on delicates, and I hung it up to dry. It's the perfect size, too; it should fit in his cat house perfectly and is big enough for him.

This mat works so well for my kitty!
Color: Gray, Size: 18"x24"
This pet bed is such a smart find! Someone had the smart idea to make a bed that stays cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter! The material on the Winter side is soft, snuggly plush with a foil layer to hold in the heat. Flip the mat over and it’s the perfect cooling mat for Summer, with a cooling ice silk fabric to keep cool. The mat is the perfect size for a small dog or a cat. Spot cleaning is recommended as the preferred way to clean but the listing says that it can be washed using the gentle cycle. It needs to be air dried however. My cat wasn’t impressed to begin with, but once she got a little playtime with her favorite toy and some catnip, she settled right in. This is a good mat to fit right into her crate for traveling.
