In CountryIn the summer of 1984, the war in Vietnam comes home to Samantha Hughes, whose father was killed there before she was born. All she has is a picture of him as a young soldier, and as Sam begins to grapple with the challenges of her own adolescent years, she also finds herself confronting the desire and need to know more about her father and what happened to him and the other American soldiers who served in Vietnam. Today's students will relate to Sam

In the summer of 1984, the war in Vietnam comes home to Samantha Hughes, whose father was killed there before she was born. All she has is a picture of him as a young soldier, and as Sam begins to grapple with the challenges of her own adolescent years, she also finds herself confronting the desire and need to know more about her father and what happened to him and the other American soldiers who served in Vietnam.

Today's students will relate to Sam and her desire to leave her small town for the bigger world versus the pull of a loving boyfriend and family. Her need to confront the controversies and horrors of war and its impact on soldiers and the families they leave behind makes In Country a meaningful book for the current generation of students.

"A brilliant and moving book . . . a moral tale that entwines public history with private anguish." -Los

Great Book.
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Its great to be able to go back and read Stokely Carmichael today in his own words. This book provides an excellent overview of what black power means and how the concept originated. Although the book seems a bit dated today, many of the ideas presented are still entirely relevant. Ive only given the book four stars due to its age. Many of the statistics presented are dated, and undoubtedly there are other texts available today that present these ideas in a much better/newer way. But if you are interested in Stokely Carmichael and what he stood for, this is the book to read.

Format: Paperback
Excellent articulation of the Black Power initiative within the Civil Rights Movement. A detailed view of Black Power, it's objectives, how these would be achieved, as well as it's misinterpretations. An afterword from each author appended in 1992 provides insight, reflection, and perspective on all that's changed, and what hasn't, since the book's publishing.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
Any book with the name Stokely Carmichael is a rare find. You can easily find the same book with Kwame Ture as the author since he changed his name and so later editions reflects the name change. Kwame Ture (fka Stokely Carmichael) changed his name for a reason. However, those of us from the sixties can never forget him nor the name Stokely Carmichael.
