Elegant and evocative, this pair of mid-19th-century French hand fans captures the essence of Napoléon III refinement. Crafted from painted papier-mâché in a soft green hue, each fan is adorned with neoclassical engravings—one titled “L’Amour égale l’Hyménée” (Love equals Marriage) and the other depicting a pastoral fête with cherubs and maidens. Gilded edging, delicate black wooden handles, and the remnants of original blue silk ties complete their storied charm. The blue silk ties are our favorite.
Though gently timeworn, they remain remarkably intact—an ode to leisure, art, and the decorative flair of the Second Empire. Style them on a velvet chair or place them atop a stack of antique books for that perfect whisper of vieilles choses.
They would feel perfectly at home in our Everyday Château drawing room, catching the light near a harp or a ticking mantel clock. In fact, we have a similar old fan tucked behind some art in our office. (last photo)
