PSB CS630 6.5" 2-Way Stereo/Surround In-Ceiling Speaker at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The CS630 is a 2-way stereo and surround in-ceiling flush mount speaker from PSB Speakers (Lenbrook Industries, Ontario, Canada), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. A uniquely versatile model in the PSB CustomSound CS600 architectural series, the CS630 houses two complete audio channels in a single ceiling cutout through its proprietary 6.5" dual voice coil carbon-filled polypropylene woofer and a pair of 3/4" aluminium dome tweeters with waveguides. With a verified frequency response of 50Hz to 20,000Hz (±3dB), the CS630 delivers genuine two-channel stereo from one ceiling opening, making it the ideal solution for bathrooms, hallways, kitchens, and secondary rooms where separate left and right speakers are impractical. Designed and voiced at Canada's National Research Council (NRC) anechoic chamber, it can also be deployed as a bipole, dipole, or 7.1 surround rear channel speaker in a home theatre system.

Dual Voice Coil Architecture: Two Channels, One Opening

The CS630's defining technology is its dual voice coil woofer, a design that provides two electrically independent audio channels within a single 6.5" (165mm) driver. Each voice coil handles one channel of a stereo pair, eliminating the need for a second ceiling cutout in spaces where the room width, joist spacing, or aesthetic constraints make a traditional two-speaker installation impractical. The woofer uses the same carbon-filled polypropylene cone with rubber surround found in the CS610, mounted on a rigid basket with a high-temperature voice coil for reliable power handling. Above the crossover point, two 3/4" (19mm) aluminium dome tweeters, each with its own precision waveguide, deliver the high-frequency portion of each channel. The tweeter array is concentrically mounted and rotatable after installation, allowing the left and right high-frequency axes to be oriented for the best stereo coverage across the listening area. A 2100Hz LR4 crossover network manages the transition between woofer and tweeters in each channel with Linkwitz-Riley phase coherence.

Bipole, Dipole, and Surround Configuration Flexibility

Because the CS630 presents two discrete audio channels at its gold-plated spring-loaded binding posts, its wiring configuration determines its acoustic behavior. Wired in phase (bipole), both tweeters radiate coherently and reinforce each other, increasing output and coverage uniformity across the room. Wired out of phase (dipole), the two channels partially cancel on-axis and radiate more energy to the sides, creating the diffuse, enveloping surround effect recommended by THX and Dolby for side surround channels in a 5.1 or 7.1 home theatre. The CS630 can also serve as a dedicated surround rear speaker in a 7.1 configuration, handling two discrete rear channels from a single ceiling location. Independent dual-position level switches for both the tweeter array and woofer allow 0dB or +3dB adjustment after installation for room-to-room tonal optimization. The nominal impedance of 10 ohms (minimum 4 ohms per channel) is fully compatible with standard home theatre receivers and stereo amplifiers.

Key Features

  • 6.5" Dual Voice Coil Woofer: Two independent audio channels in a single 6.5" carbon-filled polypropylene driver with rubber surround, enabling true stereo from one ceiling cutout in compact or constrained spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PSB CS630?

The PSB CS630 is a 2-way stereo and surround in-ceiling flush mount speaker featuring a 6.5" dual voice coil carbon-filled polypropylene woofer, two 3/4" aluminium dome tweeters with waveguides, and a frequency response of 50Hz to 20,000Hz. It delivers two independent audio channels from a single ceiling cutout and supports stereo, bipole, dipole, and 7.1 surround rear wiring configurations. It is sold individually as a single unit.

How does the PSB CS630 compare to the Polk Audio VS90RT or Klipsch CDT-5650-C II?

The PSB CS630 occupies a distinct category as a single-enclosure stereo speaker, making it a more precise competitor to products like the Polk Audio VS90RT, which also uses a dual voice coil design for two-channel stereo in one opening. The Klipsch CDT-5650-C II is a standard single-channel in-ceiling speaker and does not offer the CS630's stereo-from-one-cutout capability. Where the CS630 differentiates itself is in its NRC-validated acoustic design, rotatable dual tweeter array with waveguides, and the flexibility to wire as bipole or dipole for surround use, none of which the CDT-5650-C II provides. For Toronto homeowners needing stereo coverage in a bathroom, hallway, or kitchen without a second ceiling cutout, the CS630 has no direct equivalent in the PSB lineup.

Can the PSB CS630 be used as a Dolby Atmos or surround speaker in a home theatre?

Yes, the CS630 is well suited for surround channel use in a home theatre system. Wired out of phase as a dipole, it produces the diffuse surround presentation recommended by THX and Dolby for side surround channels in a 5.1 system. It can also handle two discrete rear channels in a 7.1 configuration from a single ceiling location, reducing the number of ceiling penetrations required in rooms where joist spacing limits speaker placement options.

What is a dual voice coil woofer and how does it work in the CS630?

A dual voice coil woofer contains two separate coil windings on a single driver cone, each connected to an independent audio channel. In the CS630, the left channel signal drives one voice coil and the right channel signal drives the other, with both coils sharing the same cone and moving together. The low-frequency output from both channels is therefore blended acoustically by the shared cone, while the high frequencies remain separated and handled by the two individual aluminium dome tweeters above the 2100Hz crossover point.

What is the difference between bipole and dipole wiring for the CS630?

Wired in phase (bipole), both of the CS630's channels radiate sound in the same acoustic polarity, reinforcing each other and producing higher overall output with broad, even coverage. Wired out of phase (dipole), the two channels partially cancel at the primary listening position and push energy to the sides, creating a diffuse, enveloping surround field. Dipole wiring is the standard approach for side surround speakers in Dolby and THX home theatre systems, while bipole wiring suits stereo music listening in rooms like kitchens or bathrooms.

What amplifier or receiver is recommended for the PSB CS630?

The CS630's nominal impedance of 10 ohms (minimum 8 ohms) makes it an easy, safe load for virtually any home theatre receiver or stereo integrated amplifier. Its recommended power range of 10 to 100 watts per channel means it works equally well with compact amplifiers used in multi-room audio systems from brands such as NAD Electronics or Bluesound as with full-size home theatre receivers from Denon, Yamaha, or Anthem.

Where can I buy the PSB CS630 in Toronto or Canada?

The PSB CS630 is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorized PSB dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound carries the full PSB CustomSound CS600 architectural speaker range and provides expert guidance on stereo system design, home theatre surround configurations, multi-room audio planning, and professional installation services for residential projects throughout the Greater Toronto Area and across Canada.

Is the PSB CS630 sold as a pair or individually?

The CS630 is sold as an individual unit (each). Because each CS630 delivers two-channel stereo from a single ceiling cutout, one unit is sufficient to provide stereo coverage in a compact space such as a bathroom or hallway. For wider rooms requiring broader stereo coverage, or for bipole/dipole surround applications, two units may be used. Both round and square magnetic frameless grilles are included with each speaker.

Sadly, DNF
Format: Kindle
I read this thru KU. I LOVED the synopsis. And then I began reading... and it was a DNF at 68% after picking it up and putting it down several times because I really loved the main female character. *****SPOILERS***** Pros: The world is unique, intriguing and fun. The primary female character is bad-a** but not a b*tech or a mary sue. The primary female has depth. I really want to know what happens to her even tho it's been weeks and I don't remember her name. The villains to the point I read are pretty good -- an ever present threat of mysterious and possibly many culprits. Cons: Way, way too many points of view. I stopped counting at 7. It's the prime reason why I don't care about most of the characters or remember their names even when I like them. There's just too many points of view so almost none of the characters have enough book space for the author to properly develop them. This literally killed the book for me. Actually it killed my desire to read. For weeks. The main male is more villain than hero. He agreed to marry the main female then locks her up & eschews her for her sister, all while bad mouthing her as unfit to rule when he never spent any time with her getting to know her. He is actually unfit to rule as he is blind to the woes of his own kingdom and starts off a peace mission to secure a ceasefire through marriage by murdering an inn full of people in her country for no real reason. Plus, he constantly makes promises he does not keep. And it's gross of him to pine for the sister behind the main female's back. ***** As much as I really wanted to see what happened to the main female character, it wasn't enough for me to keep trying to slog thru this book. There was a lot of potential here that just fell short. Hence, 3 stars.

Fae Courts with High Intrigue
Format: Kindle
This book is one that just builds and builds and then surprises you to no end. You may think you know the villains and then you are jolted in another direction. Princess Reyna is a real gem, strong of character, a fierce fighter, and loyal to her family and kingdom. Just when you think she and Lorcan, well you know, the plot is flipped. Can't wait to see where this goes in book two.

Slow, sorry but good
Format: Kindle
This was a slow moving book. Lots of character pov chapters, lots of superfluous descriptions and endless courtly appearances stalled this book to start. Once you get into the heart of the story, it takes off. Before you know it the book is done. My favorite character is Reyna. She is so strong. She is true to herself. She gets into a lot of trouble with her headstrong ways but it's entertaining. I have high hopes for Lorcan. He is honorable to a fault. Thane had turned out to be better than I thought but i still don't like him. Eislin is useless. Great plot twists at the end. I'm looking forward too book 2.

Very detailed! Beautiful world building! Strong Heroine!
Format: Kindle
Starts off a little slow and confusing with different POV’s, but starts to all come together towards the middle to make an elaborate plot line and makes it all worth it. Beautiful world building and attention to detail as well as great writing. The cliffhanger was gut wrenching! Can’t wait for the next book!

Interesting
Format: Kindle
This was a very captivating book once you got into it thoroughly. But the third person perspective was a bit hard to get used to. But as you got into it and followed the different characters, it was interesting and filled with intrigue, conflict and forbidden love. I can’t wait to read the next one and to complete the series.
