Yaginoshima Asagi whetstones are used for finishing knives on sharpening systems such as Hapstone, TSPROF, and other systems compatible with the Edge Pro form factor. The stones are custom-cut from bench stones sourced from a reliable Japanese seller, then lapped, mounted on high-quality aluminum blanks, and laser-engraved. All operations are performed in-house at Gritomatic.

Japanese name (Kanji): 八木ノ嶋 浅黄 (also written: 八木嶋, 八木の嶋)

Name breakdown:

  • 八木ノ嶋 (Yaginoshima) — a western Kyoto mine (Nishi Mono) in the Tamba/Tanba region, located east of Ohira and north of Kouzaki. Historically controlled by Akechi Mitsuhide. The mine has been closed for a long time.
  • 浅黄 (Asagi) — visual/color attribute: deep dark blue to grey-blue coloration, often with holographic Suminagashi-like patterns. Asagi is a color descriptor only; hardness is not implied by color. Strata is not explicitly named in this combination but Yaginoshima Asagi is associated with the Hon-Kuchi Naori seam.

Mining region: Western mine (Nishi Mono), Tamba/Tanba area, Kyoto Prefecture. Yaginoshima is connected to the main Hon-Kuchi Naori geological seam, which runs from Maruoyama/Ouchi/Yaginoshima eastward across the Katsura River toward Ohira, Ozuku, Okudo, Nakayama, and Narutaki. Suita from Yaginoshima is most famous, along with its Namito stones. The mine is permanently closed.

Grit rating (JIS equivalent): Yaginoshima stones span a wide range depending on hardness. Softer specimens (Aoto-type, LV 2–3) are documented at approximately 4,000–6,000 JIS. Hard Asagi specimens (LV 4.5–5) are extremely dense and fine, suitable for razor finishing, placing them at approximately 10,000–12,000 JIS. The Asagi variant specifically is characterized as extremely dense and fine.

LV Hardness: LV 5 (very hard) for the dense Asagi type. Confirmed at hardness 5 across multiple vendor listings for Yaginoshima Asagi. Some specimens rated LV 2–4 exist (the mine produces a range), but the Asagi type from this mine is specifically known for exceptional hardness and density. On the 1–5 Tanaka Toishi scale: hardness 4.5, wear rate 1.5, self-slurry 1.5.

Recommended progression: After a synthetic 5,000–8,000 JIS stone or a medium JNAT (LV 2–3). For razor use, a full Mikawa Shiro Nagura progression (Botan → Mejiro → Koma) is recommended before or on this stone. Also highly effective for knives and traditional carpentry tools as a final finishing step.

Composition: High-density siliceous shale, Hon-Kuchi Naori geological formation. Characteristic deep dark blue-grey base coloration with holographic Suminagashi-like patterning and Goma (sesame seed) inclusions. The very high density of the stone is responsible for both its hardness and exceptional fineness.

Steels to sharpen: Universal, with particular strength in razor finishing. Despite LV 5 hardness, demonstrates smooth sharpening behavior and works well with heavier blades such as knives and woodworking tools. Produces a very even and consistent Kasumi finish. Respected in traditional Japanese carpentry for tool finishing. Well suited to high-carbon steels; use with slurry for soft iron cladding.

"Durable Fun: Pweituoet Heavy Duty Squeaky Dog Balls for Aggressive Chewers"
Size: 4.5"
Product Review: The Pweituoet 4.5” Heavy Duty Squeaky Dog Balls have been a hit with my dog, proving to be both durable and entertaining. Durability: These dog balls are impressively tough. My dog is an aggressive chewer, and most toys don’t last long, but these balls have held up exceptionally well. The heavy-duty material and spiked design are perfect for dogs who love to chew, providing both durability and safety. Entertainment: The built-in squeaker adds an extra layer of fun. It captures my dog’s attention immediately, and the squeak keeps him engaged for longer play sessions. The spikes also make the ball easy for him to grip and carry around. Size: The 4.5” size is ideal for medium to large dogs. It’s large enough to avoid being a choking hazard but still easy for my dog to pick up and play with. The size and weight are just right for games of fetch, too. Value: Given the durability and how much my dog enjoys these balls, they offer great value for the price. They’ve lasted much longer than other toys we’ve tried, making them a worthwhile investment for any dog owner with a tough chewer. Overall Verdict: The Pweituoet Heavy Duty Squeaky Dog Balls are an excellent choice for medium to large dogs, especially those who are aggressive chewers. They’re durable, fun, and well-sized, making them a great addition to your dog’s toy collection. Highly recommended!

Actually stands up to use
Size: 4.5", Size: 4.5"
I have a pitbull who is a toy destroyer. All those toys, even the ones that say tough enough for destroyers, never hold up. THESE BALLS ARE AWESOME! I bought the 2 pack of the 4.5 inch balls and they lasted a year. I literally am writing this review after ordering a new set. These are well worth the money and Ghost (my dog) loves them. Hes a 103lbs pitbull and his life mission is cuddles and destroying his toys... and these lasting a year of everyday use is friggin awesome. Both toys failed in the same way eventually. They gave out in a circle around the "squeker".

She chewed it up in less than 10 minutes. This is not for heavy chewers but dogs that like to actually play with their toys it would be great!!! I gave it a 3 because it worked for my other dog who likes to play🤘

Durable Fun for Chew-Happy Dogs
Size: Medium, Style: Squeaker
This dog ball has been a hit with my dogs, despite their tendency to chew through toys. These balls hold up surprisingly well given his chewing habits, which is why I keep coming back to them. They provide endless fun with their squeaky feature, keeping my dogs engaged and active. One thing I really like is their durability. While my dogs do eventually chew them up, they last a significant amount of time compared to other toys we've tried. The squeaker adds an extra layer of excitement, making playtime even more enjoyable for my dog. However, if your dog is an aggressive chewer, be prepared for some wear, tear, and replacement over time. The squeaker balls are worth it for the durability and entertainment they provide with the current price tag. They withstand a good amount of chewing, making them a reliable choice for medium breeds that love to play and chew. Just remember that they will not last forever.
